Guide to Internships & Housing in Washington DC
Sponsored by: Rutgers University Office of Federal Relations and Career Services

Washington DC
The Rutgers in Washington Program began in 2000 to enhance the experience of Rutgers students interning in the DC area. It provides a forum for interns to meet other interns, network with alumni, distinguished guests, and explore DC through numerous events. The program serves as a resource and support system to interns, while providing them professional, cultural and social experiences.

Participants can take advantage of as many programs that suit their interest and schedule throughout the summer. In past years, RIW has sponsored events with speakers such as Congressman Frank Pallone, former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer and Christine T. Whitman, EPA Administrator. Among other places, program participants have visited the CIA and USA Today.

While the RIW program does not identify internship opportunities for students, Career Services can facilitate the internship search process for you. A great way to get started is to schedule an appointment with a counselor at Career Services to discuss your internship search and career goals. In addition, the Career Services website has numerous career related links that can aid you in your internship search.

Many students assume that they have to intern for their organization full time (40 hours/week). This is simply not true! If money is tight, consider interning for 20 hours per week and finding a part time job for the other 20 hours a week. This will allow you to earn money while gaining internship experience.
